User-centered hospital clothes

As my thesis project, I developed a research that culminated in the redesign of the traditional hospital gown and the design of two more clothes to satisfy the varied patients’ needs. The proposals prioritize dignity in order to use design to help patients in their physical recovery.

From a design point of view, the gown’s users are not only patients, but also doctors and nurses because even if they do not wear the garment, they must interact with it to effectively do their jobs. That is why during the whole design process, I continuously interviewed four patients, four doctors and four nurses to successfully satisfy their wants and needs through my proposals.

Do not hesitate to contact me if you are interested in knowing more about the project.

One of the most relevant conclusions to which I arrived was that it is extremely important to treat patients as people, instead of just treating their pathologies. Therefore, we cannot keep using just the traditional gown because one single object cannot be functional in every single one of the many, different medical situations that may exist.

Gown

Direct substitute of the gown currently used. The new design will prioritize dignity by not exposing the patient’s genitals, unlike the current gown. It also eases medical exploration thanks to the way it ties from the shoulders, and the design adapts to a wide range of body sizes.

Shirt

The shirt is designed to facilitate examinations, particularly for the medical specialties that do not require to access the upper and lower part of the body at the same time. The shirt could be used alone, while keeping the patient's own lower garment, or together with the pants shown below. In addition, the shirt could work for patients who are in recovery after a mild surgery, or even for patients with chronic pathologies, like cancer patients going through chemotherapy.

Pants

The pants aim to facilitate medical examinations. In a similar way than the shirt, the pants are to be used when it is necessary to access only the lower part of the patient's body, without the need to overexpose the upper part. It could be used alone by keeping the patient's own upper garment, together with the shirt, or even below the traditional hospital gown in case there is too much resistance to change the gown.
